Though it’s hard to imagine Rue Bennett being played by someone else other than Zendaya on Euphoria, there was a chance that could’ve been the case.

The role had been given consideration for a newcomer actor. According to a recent Variety story, it ultimately came down to who would be better psychologically equipped to portray such a complex character.

She added, “It’s so interesting. A polar opposite. Because here’s Zendaya, who has none of the life experiences of Rue, who was able to dig into her toolbox and access it in such a beautiful way.”

Venditti also talked about how Hunter Schafer got cast for the role of Jules despite not having acting experience. "I contacted her agent, but they initially declined. The actor had to be willing to engage in any type of sexual encounter.

As reported by Variety, the casting director of Euphoria Jennifer Venditti recently revealed that while Zendaya was always the creative team's first choice for the role of Rue, an unknown actor was almost cast as the lead.

Jennifer added that they hooked up the young actor with a coach to help bring out her talents, but it wasn't quite the right fit in the end — and Zendaya ultimately stepped into Rue's shoes to give an Emmy-winning performance.
